Vignette Ron is a 24-year-old Native American male who initiated counseling services after his friend, Carol insisted. Liberty Resources, Integrated Health Care provides affordable individual, family, couples, and group therapy as well as a number of other services. At intake, Ron tearfully shared that he has missed many days of work, sleeps a lot, and hardly eats. Ron states that he feels “misery” in his stomach and chest constantly and has lost 15 pounds in the last five months. Ron stated that his symptoms began right after his birthday. He and Carol have been good friends since high school. Although she feels like his girlfriend, he is not sure. Ron shared that is confused by his feelings for someone at work, but would not provide more information. Ron describes his mother as alcoholic. He has never lived with her. However, he describes the relationship as conflictual and in the past she had told him he was a mistake and that she did not love him. Ron does not know his father. Ron lived with his maternal grandmother and grandfather on the west coast for the first five years of his life, until his grandmother died. At that time, he continued to live with his grandfather and though his grandfather was very empathetic and caring, he did not set many boundaries for Ron. Ron became involved with gangs and began to fail school. He stated that he joined the gang because he was “looking for love”. When his grandfather passed away, Ron, 16 years of age, left the gang life and went to live with family on the Onondaga Nation Reservation in Lafayette, NY. Ron graduated from high school at age 19 years of age. He has worked at the New Lafayette Inn & Restaurant for the past five years. He met Carol at the restaurant. She is non-Native. He has saved enough money to move out of his Aunt and Uncles home but he now he feels paralyzed to make the move.
