Do Americans Work too Hard?

Americans work more than anyone in the industrialized world. More than the English, more than the French, way more than the Germans or Norwegians. Even, recently, more than the Japanese. And Americans take less vacation, work longer days, and retire later, too. But for many of us, more work leads to more stress and a lower quality of life. Without time to unwind, take care of your home, spend time with loved ones, enjoy our hobbies, connect with friends, and generally live a more balanced life. Stress is the #1 cause of health problems – mentally and physically. And there are few things that stress us out on a consistent basis like work does, especially when it takes away from all of the other things that life has to offer.
One constraint in our economy is time. As a society, we make choices about the allocation of time between work and other pursuits. In the US, most workers are eligible for overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours a week, whereas most European workers become eligible at 35 hours per week. In addition, workers in Europe have guaranteed vacation time, five weeks in France, a benefit not available in the US. As a result the typical US worker puts in about 2,000 hours per year compared to 1,500 hours per year in France and Germany.
Do americans work too hard? – What is the opportunity cost if US laws were changed to require a shorter work week and longer vacation time? Will America face diminishing returns and fall behind in the global marketplace and no longer be a leader in productivity if US laws are changed?
